This work was filmed while I was a resident at Acre Projects in Wisconsin and in the USVI. The work of Paul Gaugin is loaded with racial signifiers and narratives of silence and displacement. At the same time, the aesthetics of the paintings are filled with beauty and are incredibly relevant in the trajectory of art history. This video work and installation aims at pulling back the layers of understanding and meaning of the life and work of Paul Gaugin utilizing the voices of post colonial philosphers that are a part of Francophone country’s (mainly from the diaspora.) The audience/viewer/participant is forced to confront the subjects of this video work through the contrast of idyllic landscapes juxtaposed with digital renderings merged from the icononic paintings of Paul Gaugin.
